Kutokana na hali duni ya anga pamoja na kuzorota kwa uchumi, mara kwa mara wakaazi wa eneo la Kagwa katika Rarieda hukumbwa na tatizo la njaa. Ili kupambana na shida hii, akina mama wa sehemu hii walianzisha kikundi cha Kagwa Self Help (KASH) kwa lengo la kuwafundisha wakaazi jinsi ya kuhifadhi chakula wakitumia mbinu za kienyeji.

Katika Kagwa hamna huduma za stima. Hali hii hupelekea wakulima kuuza mazao yao kwa bei ya chini kwa vile hawana jinsi ya kuyahifadhi. Kwa mfano, wavuvi hulazimika kuuza samaki wachache wanaovua kwa bei ya chini kwa vile hawana barafu ya kuhifadhia mpaka wawe kiwango kinachotakikana na kampuni kubwa za ununuzi wa samaki ambazo hununua kwa bei nafuu.

Kikundi cha KASH kiliamua kutumia mbinu za kienyeji za kuhifadhi chakula kwa sababu teknologia inayotumika ni rahisi na hutumia maliasili ya eneo la Kagwa. Wanatoa mafunzo yao kwa njia tofauti kama vile katika mikutano ya hadhara na kupitia kwa vijitabu vya brosha vilivyo andikwa na lugha ya wenyeji.

Ukaushaji

Mbinu hii hutumia joto ya jua. Kwa vile nchi yetu huwa katika eneo la joto nyingi, basi hii ni mojawapo ya njia za kuhifadhi chakula zinazogharamia pesa kidogo kutekeleza. Chakula kinacho hifadhiwa kwa njia hii ni kama mahindi, mtama, maharagwe, nyama na mboga kama sukumawiki.

Muundo huu (kwenye picha) umetengenezwa kutokana na mbao. Sehemu ya juu inakifuniko cha kioo ambacho huwezesha miale ya jua kupita lakini huzuia uchafu usiingie kwa chakula.

Black absorber – Ni mabati yaliyopakwa rangi nyeusi ili yafyonze na kuhifadhi joto.
Vents – Ni matundu ya kutolea gesi
Extractor – Ni tundu la kuingiza mkono ili kupindua chakula unachikausha.
Cover – Kifuniko cha kioo

Ikiwa ungetaka mboga na pilipili zako zihifadhi rangi, mwangaza wa jua hupunguzwa wakati wa ukaushaji. Wanunuzi huvutiwa na zaidi ikiwa mboga kavu zina ile rangi zilikuwa nayo shambani.

Kuhifadhi na moshi au chumvi

Vyakula vinavyo hifadhiwa kwa njia hii ni kama nyama na samaki. Nyama huwekwa juu ya rafu iliyoundwa juu ya jiko la kuni. Moto unawekwa kuni zinazotoa moshi mwingi. Nyama hiyo inakauka polepole na pia huchukua ladha ya moshi ambayo watu wengi wanaipendelea. Chumvi pia hutumiwa katika kuhifadhi nyama.

Ubora wa njia hizi mbili ni kwamba ikiwa nyama imepatikana kwa wingi, inaweza kuhifadhiwa kutumika kwa muda mrefu. Hii inamaanisha kwamba hali ya afya inadumishwa hasa kwa watoto kwa sababu watapata madini ya protini ambao ni muhimu kwa motto anayekua.
