Get Involved in the Fight Against AIDS

HIV/AIDS has cost thousands of people their lives. There are many ways you can fight back, but before you pin on your red ribbon, get the facts!

  • Five people die of AIDS worldwide every minute. (Souce: Population Resource Center)
  • 42 million people worldwide are living with HIV (the virus that causes AIDS). (Souce: Population Resource Center)
  • Abstinence is the only 100 percent protection against HIV/AIDS.
  • There are only four ways you can become infected with HIV:
    1. Blood
    2. Semen
    3. Vaginal fluids
    4. Breast milk

Women are at high risk of contracting HIV.
Although, you may not be infected with HIV/AIDS, you can show support for the millions of people who are. Here are some ways you can get involved.

Have safe sex

Wearing a condom is the best way to protect yourself from HIV/AIDS. If you’re going to have sex, protect yourself and your partner.

Get tested for HIV/AIDS
Even if you think there’s no way you could be infected, think about getting tested. Respect your health and your partner’s health by finding out.

Wear the red AIDS ribbon
Wearing this red ribbon shows that you support people with AIDS. Make one at home with a ribbon and a pin. Ask your friends to do the same. You can also download a virtual ribbon on your computer and send it as part of your email.

Send a World AIDS Day promise
The World AIDS Campaign is collecting promises from people all over the world about what they want to do to stop AIDS. You can write a few sentences on their website and send your personal promise. These statements will be sent to politicians and leaders across the world.
