Impotence

Impotence is when you can’t get or keep an erection. It is also known as Erectile Dysfunction (ED). It affects millions of men and can cause depression.

What can cause impotence?
Some men are afraid they can’t perform well sexually and this can cause impotence. This is often called “performance anxiety” or “fear of failure.” Other causes include heavy drinking, anger, worry, guilt, being tired, and emotional stress. Causes can include:

  • Hormone imbalance
  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Injuries to the spinal cord or brain
  • Diseases like multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s
  • Surgery or radiation (for your prostate, bladder, rectum, or colon)
  • Pelvic injuries from sports accidents (like bicycle riding, gymnastics or horseback riding)
  • Prescription drugs (especially for blood pressure and anti-depressants)
  • Depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, anger, or fear
  • Heart disease or clogged arteries

How do you prevent it?
One of the best ways to prevent impotence is by exercising regularly. Exercise gets the blood flowing through your body. This can help you keep an erection.

How do you treat it?
You can take medications like Viagra™, or a similar medication. You can also get surgery, implants, or therapy. If you’re having problems, the most important thing is to ask your doctor for help.
