The common breed of goats in Kenya is the small East African goat. This goat produces very little milk and is not ideal for dairy production. However, it can be bred with foreign species to produce hi-breeds that produce more milk and are resistant to diseases and weather conditions. The foreign breeds introduced in Kenya are:
- Toggenburg, Boer, Saanen, British Alpine, German Alpine, Anglo Nubian, Angora, Oberhauzen,
- These goats survive on different climatic conditions and require specific rearing conditions in order to thrive. If you are interested in keeping dairy goats, contact your local Livestock Production experts for guidance on the most suitable breeds or cross-breeding programs available in you area.
